Manaus Days 1

We arrived in Manaus early on Thanksgiving morning.    We had no organized trips scheduled for today and Barry had a stack of papers to grade so he stayed onboard ship all morning to work on those.  Jayne did some walking around the old part of Manaus with some friends from the ship.  Then in the afternoon we both did some walking together.  It is surely a hot, humid, and chaotic place. We would say we visited the market but the whole downtown area seems to be inhabited by vendors and hawkers of every sort.  Here are a few pictures.

We weren't sure what this was. Seemed like a huge salted fish roll.

Of course the one place of genuine elegance and beauty is the famous opera house, the Teatro Amazonica, built in the early 20th century during the rubber boom here.    Many folks from the ship are going to symphony concert on Thursday night, but we bought tickets for a concert on Friday.

The Cathedral was also very nice.

We went for dinner with a group of about thirty-five from the ship to a Brazilian  rodizio restaurant called Churrascaria Buffalo. www.churrascariabufalo.com.br

Interestingly, Barry has talked several times about a wonderful meal he had in Manaus when he was here over 20 years ago on a tour of Brazil sponsored by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education.  When we got out of the taxi at Buffalo he realized instantly that this was the place.

We never saw a menu because tonight they were featuring a very nice buffet with fish dishes, sushi, green salads, apple salads, and waldorf salad, cold cuts of meat, olives and lots of cheese!!  It was very good .  Jayne tasted one of the beef choices and had a bit of chicken.  Barry ate it all (except for the Sushi).  There were bowls of rice, couscous and a bean, pork and rice dish on each table.  And the waiters came around with French fries, onion rings. Fried yucca, fried corn – like French fry shaped hush puppies and fried dough wrapped around several types of cheese.  Not a heart friendly menu!!!  Some even order dessert after all that!! Wow!!

Does Jayne look that she sacred of the meat or what!  Not Isaiah, one of the resident life people on the ship.

Speaking of the ship, we had a wonderful view of on our return.
