Day Two on the MV Explorer

We've really had some pretty noticeable rocking back and forth today. We were in a large meeting room with two sets of curtains behind the speaker.  I noticed that the curtains moved in a slow dance back a forth about a foot or so.  I also had trouble sitting up straight in my chair.   I also noticed lots of folks are wearing the sea-sickness patch.  We're both wearing "sea bands" which apply pressure to points an inch above our wrists.  We've not had any trouble.  I guess there's something to that acupuncture thing.  The day has been warm and beautiful and the ocean looks so serene. So why all that rocking back and forth?

We dock in Halifax, Nova Scotia at eight tomorrow morning.    We are free to leave the ship for the day and tour the city.  We have to be back by late afternoon to greet students parents and show them around the ship.  The students will board the ship on Thursday.  (Maybe we will find an internet cafe with enough bandwidth to upload more pictures.

Jayne didn't have much to do today and spent most of the day reading in the room.   There are a number of children on board and she has made contact with the fellow in charge of "dependent care" and some of the parents.  (We ate dinner with a psychology professor and his wife from South Dakota who are traveling with three children.)  She will probably volunteer to help out with the children while their parents "work."

You may be wondering about the food.  It's pretty typical college cafeteria fare. Not bad.  Not great.  And bound to get boring before long.   I have eaten the fish entre for several meals and have been surprised how much I've liked it.  Jayne says the vegetarian options are fair.

We also both got some time in the small gym today.   It will get crowded once the students are on board, but there is time set aside for faculty, staff, and spouses.

More meetings today.   This morning was dedicated to academic matters.   We learned about the how the University of Virginia honor system works here on the ship and we got our class rolls.   For some reason, 28 of the 30 or so students in my upper level theology class are from the University of San Diego.  I sure students from California are enough like one's from Virginia that I have some clue how to teach them!  I hope they are different, too.

Hey, if there are things your wondering about that we've not mentioned you can always ask us questions in the comment section

Just noticed the beautiful sunset out our window.
